Priests Barred From Denying Puja To Lower Castes
On Thursday, the Uttarakhand High Court upheld the human rights of the person belonging to lower castes. The court barred priests from discriminating people from lower caste, by refusing to perform various religious ceremonies.
The Court ordered that all person in Uttarakhand irrespective of their caste, offer prayer in any temple without any discrimination. This is system’s failure to protect the dignity, honor and human rights of the persons belonging to lower caste.
These directions came in a response to a public interest litigation filed by Pukhraj and others in 2016. Various Supreme Court orders and cases as precedents the bench came to this conclusion. Many references from books also helped the court to reach this verdict.
The court said, “ high caste priests cannot refuse to perform religious ceremonies on the behalf of persons belonging to lower caste. It is high time we remove such discrimination.”
