SC Dismisses Plea For Probe Into Corruption Allegations Against Judge Of Allahabad HC
A Supreme Court bench of retired Justice A. K. Sikri and Justice Abdul Nazeer had in December, 2018 agreed to hear the matter, of corruption charges against Allahabad High Court judge, Justice Ram Krishna Gautam, however the Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on 26th July 2019 refused to entertain the same.
Justice Gautam, a District & Sessions Judge was alleged to have been associated with crime syndicates and accused of handing acquittal orders to several prominent accused persons after receiving illegal gratification. He was also allegedly involved in interfering with the judicial functions of subordinate judges in order to influence final judgment. The petitioner, "Progressive Lawyer Association", is a Meerut-based NGO which preferred an SLP against the decision of the High Court which gave Justice Gautam a clean chit. The petitioner and District Judge, U K Sirhoi, had both made representations to the Allahabad High Court alleging misconduct and corruption on the part of Justice Gautam.
Senior Counsel Vikas Singh, appearing on behalf of the petitioner-association, had pointed out in December 2018, the inconsistencies in the statements of the accused and the SSP as to the events of the party, of whether it was a private party or not and whether the said ‘guest’ accused was guilty and granted bail. “Why are such senior people like the SSP and the judge giving different explanations?” he said, urging that such an issue requires examination.
